Storytelling alternative assessment
Why Storytelling? Watch the video above to know why storytelling is important.
Today, we learnt on what is story telling and watched a video on a student participating in a storytelling competition. We also went through the rubrics for our storytelling alternative assessment which will be on Week 8.
You have two weeks to prepare. Each student will be given 3 minutes each to tell the story.
To download the storytelling rubrics and information, click this link
Steps to take
1. Choose a suitable story that interests you. (by next Wednesday)
Some suitable stories for storytelling are fables, folktales and short fairy tales. Make sure the story is not too long as you are given only three minutes.
Some useful websites with short stories
http://www.longlongtimeago.com/llta_fables.html
http://www.shortstories.net/for-kids/fables-for-kids/
http://www.moralstories.org/fables/
2. Draw the scenes from the story in sequence.
3. Find suitable pictures to match the story sequence on the internet.
4. Include the pictures according to the story sequence on PowerPoint slides. You may include a caption for each picture to help you remember.
5. Practise, practise, practise
Watch the following videos for examples of good storytelling.
Q&A (Questions that your classmates have in class)
1) Can I use storybooks from home?
Yes. When choosing a story, always keep in mind that you have three minutes to present and you need to find a story that is easy to remember and will interest you and your peers.
2) Can I include pictures from the book?
No. Due to copyright issues, you are not allowed to include pictures from the book. You may include pictures that may help you remember the sequence of events in the story.
3) Can I read off from the slides?
No. You are only allowed to include one caption for each picture to help you remember the story. You can read the caption to your audience if you want to.
4) Can I not use PowerPoint?
You may use other appropriate software such as Prezi.
5) Will the content of the PowerPoint be graded?
The content of the PowerPoint will be observed but does not contribute to the overall grade.
6) Will the marks be included in CA1?
Yes. The final assessment will contribute to the overall English grade.
7) Can I save my file in a thumbdrive?
Yes. You may also send a copy of the file to rose_iliyana_mohamad_said@moe.edu.sg as a backup.

Visitors during our Science lesson today!
Ryan brought this plant to school and shared with the class why his plant is a living thing.
Raynn brought two millipedes to school and shared with us how millipedes respond to changes by curling up.
Kayden shared with us that the spider eats insects and responds to changes as it looks scared when the container is shaken.
Some boys scooped out tadpoles for the class to see. We learnt that tadpoles grow into frogs and are living things. Reign even shared with the class that they are amphibians.
We then went to the ecological garden to find other examples of living things and non-living things. We also noted down some things which we are not sure are living or non-living things. In class, we discussed and came to a conclusion on whether the things that we are not sure of are living or non-living things.
Science is fun!

Science Updates
We have been studying on what is classification and why we classify things. It is to make it easier for us to study and understand the diversity around us.
We classify things based on their common characteristics. We tried to classify the things we can find in the classroom based on their common characteristics such as texture, shape, size and colour.
We also learnt how to draw tables and diagrams and how they can be used to show how things can be classified.
After that, we watched a video and learnt about the characteristics of living and non-living things.
You can view the video again by clicking the link below:
http://youtu.be/cPiNTkCmmv0
Next, we will be learning on how to classify living and non-living things.
You can read more on how to classify living things on the website below:
http://www.kidsbiology.com/biology_basics/classification/classification1.php
You can also play a game and try to classify animals. Click on any of the link below to start having fun!

English updates
The Garden of Abdul Gasazi was the first story from
the Houghton Mifflin Anthologies that we read in class. The story is the
best-selling children’s picture book in 1979 by author Chris Van Allsburg. Chris
Van Allsburg is the author of other great stories such as The Polar Express and
Jumanji.
From the story, we learnt comprehension skills such
as drawing conclusions and noting details. We also learnt some vocabulary words
that we can use in our writing. The link below is a fun way that we can
practise the vocabulary words.
We will also practise writing the vocabulary
words and other high-frequency words during Spelling. Spelling will be
on every Friday.
